How To Cite Correctly In A Research Paper


At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays, research papers, and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises). Add a citation whenever you quote, paraphrase, or summarize information or ideas.


  • For author (s) name (s), the norm is to write the surname first then the first initial of their first name, ie., Jones, A. If the publication has more than three authors, you can write the first author’s name and use the abbreviation et al for the rest. For example, Jones, A et al.

  • There are two main ways to format an in-text citation: Parenthetical citation or Narrative citation. Parenthetical citation: Put all the citation information at the end of the sentence: Narrative citation: Include some of the citation information as part of the sentence:

  • 1. Name the author and the publication date in-text before a quote. To simplify the in-text citation, place the last name of the author in the text to.
